Exum Guide

Hometown: Seattle, WA

Guiding since 2000

A long-time Northwest climber, Dave is one of the premier international expedition guides operating today. He has guided and climbed throughout the Cascades, South America, the Himalaya, Altai, Alaska Range, and Russia. He has traveled and climbed extensively over his lifetime and has worked as a full-time guide since 2000. A natural leader, Dave has been described as the ultimate guide, instructor and friend while still spending time on a number of technical personal climbs in the Himalaya, Alaska and South America. Dave has led expeditions to all of the Seven Summits as well as climbs and expeditions in Mongolia, Mexico, Bolivia and other Himalayan peaks. He has guided to the top of Carstensz Pyramid on four occasions.

He is also an important addition to our instructional courses in the Cascades. Dave enjoys teaching the fundamentals and guides technical ascents such as Ama Dablam while enjoying city life with our groups in between climbs. His grasp for languages, history and climbing has made him both an educated and successful guide on all our programs. His broad knowledge of Nepali history and politics makes his expeditions particularly memorable. He recently climbed a new route on Mt. Vinson with Todd Passey and in 2002 received the AAC Mountain Adventure Award grant. In 2008 he reached the summit of Everest for the fifth team in as many years. During his 2004-2008 seasons on Everest, 90 climbers reached the summit under his guidance. In multiple winters he has given his time instructing at The Khumbu Climbing School and continues to support the program in a variety of ways.
