Teewinot

Climber nearing the summit of Teewinot. Photo Exum Guide Kevin MahoneyFrom Jenny Lake and Lupine Meadows, Teewinot Mountain so dominates the view of the central Teton peaks that many visitors leave thinking it is the Grand Teton.

But it is a fine peak in its own right, and the most accessible of the high peaks, reaching 12,325 feet in elevation.

The standard route up the East Face is direct, obvious, and easy.

A steep hike up seemingly never-ending switchbacks leads to the Apex, the tip of a huge triangular stand of forest.

During the early season, the rest of the climb proceeds up snowfields and is straightforward, though intimidating if you have never been on steep snow.

Later in the season the snow is replaced by scrambling and easy rock-climbing.

The summit is tiny - only one person can sit on it, the exposure into Cascade Canyon is ferocious, and the views of Mount Owen and the Grand Teton are marvelous.

Exum usually guides Teewinot in a long, strenuous day. Plan on an early start. There is no easier way to spend a day in the mountains and reach a major alpine peak.
