Titcomb Basin

Climber on N Arete of Ellingwood: Exum Guide Forest McCarthyTitcomb Basin is a high alpine valley with no trees but many tarns and lakes, some of which contain large trout. The approach from Elkhart Park, above Pinedale, is long and arduous.

Its western reaches feature minor peaks and an important col. At its northern end are more serious challenge--Mount Woodrow Wilson and The Sphinx.  But it is the Basin's eastern flank that captures a climbers attention: the great walls and gullies of Mounts Helen, Sacagawea, and Fremont, all of which provide varied routes for the climber, from scrambles to dead-serious Grade V alpine rock routes and ice climbs.

Joe Kelsey, in his guidebook, Climbing and Hiking in the Wind River Mountains, says Titcomb Basin "offers the greatest variety in the range--walk-ups, easy and difficult rock climbs, ice climbs, and mixed mountaineering routes". Exum suggests you plan on spending a week tin Titcomb Basin to enjoy its many splendors.
