Snow School

Snow SchoolThe Teton Range receives an average of 400 inches of snow each winter, and the snow pack often lingers well into July, hence novice climbers wishing to climb Teton routes early in the season are required to take Snow School. Don't consider it a burden though, because Snow School is one of the most popular classes we offer.

Instruction includes ascending and descending snow, self-arrest both with and without an ice ax, use of snow-anchors, and belaying. You will get loads of practice with your self-arrests. You will be falling sideways, face down and head first, and on your back and head first—expect to have fun and get wet! Also expect to be comfortable on snow by the end of the day.

Depending on snow levels, Snow Schools will held either in Hanging Canyon, above Jenny Lake or at the  Jackson Hole Ski Area.

Being competent on snow if you are around mountains is like knowing how to swim if you are around water: a fundamental skill necessary for safety.
