Cube Point

Group on Cube Point. Exum Guide Jim Williams CollectionCube Point is a prominent serrated summit on the east ridge of Symmetry Spire. It can be climbed by two short, easy pitches, or by its East Ridge, which is longer and more challenging, though still easy.

Cube is a full-day, but well worth it. The steep approach along the footpath up Hanging Canyon passes waterfalls and meadows carpeted with wildflowers. The hike alone is commonly judged to be one of the most beautiful in Grand Teton National Park.

After a break at lovely Arrowhead Pond, a scramble up a steep couloir leads to the base of the ridge. Quite exposed but simple climbing leads to the summit block--the so-called "cube," though in fact it was named not after its three-dimensional shape but in honor of the cube steak consumed by the first ascent party.  The leads are short, the belays pleasantly secure, and the climbing fun.

For the beginner,  the East Ridge of Cube Point is an excellent introduction to Teton climbing. One of our guidebooks calls it a "mini-classic." The view from the summit of the Cathedral Peaks--Teewinot, Mount Owen, and the Grand Teton--is as good as any in the range.
