In the footsteps of
Ernest Shackleton

November 2004

Al Read In November of 2000, Exum's own Al Read co-led the first commercial expedition across South Georgia Island, following in Sir Ernest Shackleton's valiant footsteps. In November of 2004, Geographic Expeditions will repeat this immensely rewarding expedition, crossing the island from King Haakon Bay to Stromnes Bay. The expedition will be led by Dave Hahn and Peter Hillary.

It is an outing for the adventurous and historically minded. Shackleton's traverse of the mountainous island was the culmination of one of history's great survival epics. Al summed up the adventure this way: "The crossing was relatively straightforward; however, the island can be a real weather factory. We roped up all the way, with glacier travel protocol, pulling sleds and carrying packs. It was a fantastic adventure, one in which I'm proud to have taken part."

Those not inclined to a sled and pack adventure are welcome on the voyage, which includes a variety of outings and lectures on the wildlife and history of the region.
