This one-day course
is for anyone who
would like to learn the fundamentals of rock climbing and mountaineering. Please see our current rates for this course.
Curriculum:
- basics of efficient hiking
- basics of rock climbing: balance, body position, smearing, edging
- downclimbing
- knots: figure eight follow through, figure eight on a bight, one handed bowline
around waist, bowline on a bight (Get a headstart and learn the knots at Alan Grogono's knot site.)
- anchoring (securing oneself to the mountainside)
- belaying (protecting partners with rope)
- walking-in-coils (moving the rope and rope team as a unit across easy
terrain)
- rope management
- overview of climbing rating system
- easy four pitch climb (5.3 to 5.5)
- basic rappelling (descending a rock face using a rope)
- basic toproping (5.4 to 5.7)
