Alpine Mountaineering Seminar-Early Summer
Mid to Late June
send this page to a friend

June is one of the best times of year for mixed climbing because the mountains are still covered with a gradually melting winter snowpack. Travel is fast and easy on the snow that covers boulder fields. Avalanche danger is generally low especially on cold mornings and the rock is often dry if the sun has been shining during the day. Gullies and chimneys, however, are usually packed with excellent water ice because of melting during the day, and subsequent re-freezing at night. The combination of conditions makes for one of the most fun and challenging climbing mediums.

Exum is excited to offer an annual Alpine Mountaineering Seminar during the month of June. This course is for anyone who would like to experience the thrill of mixed climbing in the high mountains, without the frigid temperatures of winter. This four-day course spends multiple nights in the Teton high country and groups are kept to two people per guide to increase safety and to personalize instruction. Instruction is given during the approach and during technical ascents.

The curriculum for this course includes equipment selection; fundamentals of the wet snow avalanche; avalanche rescue; snow, ice, and rock climbing techniques; rock, snow, and ice anchors; self arrest; rope management; belaying; rappelling; use of crampons and ice axes.
