Sinks Canyon and Wild Iris
Just west Lander, WY, Sinks Canyon offers climbing on three different types of rock. In the lower canyon, beautiful desert-like sandstone walls lure the adventurous crack climber, while the famous limestone crag in the middle canyon sports steep bolted face climbs on thin edges. Gneissic cliffs in the upper canyon provide all difficulties of cracks, faces, and slabs.
Forty-five minutes south of Lander, the white limestone crags of Wild Iris grace the hillsides above South Pass (El. 7,550 feet) at the southern tip of the Wind River Mountains. From the car, we hike one mile to this paradise of one-pitch bolted sport climbs. Best suited to advanced climbers, Wild Iris is famous for steep faces and overhangs of pocket climbing graded 5.9 and up.
