Wind River Ski and Snowboard Mountaineering Expedition
With assistance from paid porters to help us carry our equipment during the over 15-mile approach, Exum guides will lead adventurous skiers and snowboarders into the heart of the Wind River Range. After a two-day approach through spectacular granite canyons, we will establish a base camp at the snout of the Mammoth Glacier, a massive hulk of ice gracing the east side of Gannett Peak, the highest point in Wyoming.
In every direction from this camp are spectacular peaks flanked with couloirs and steep faces perpetually coated with snow and ice. Participants will learn all of the skills included in our Teton camps, plus much more about multi-night camping, trip logistics, food preparation, wilderness travel, and Leave No Trace techniques. Technical skills include: equipment selection; packing your backpack; pacing yourselft; skinning (climbing hills with skins on your skis); ice axe use; self arrest; rope management; knots; rappelling; climbing snow, ice and rock; cramponing; avalanche awareness; snowpack evaluation; avalanche transceiver use; avalanche rescue; establishing rock and snow anchors; belaying climbers and skiers/snowboarders; steep skiing techniques; ski mountaineering ethics; and the inner game.
Please call us to arrange a trip.
