Discover the rewards of backcountry skiing with a
three-day introductory program that blends avalanche
education with the fundamentals of winter backcountry
skiing. We’ll start from the start, introducing the
gear, how to use it, and the costs and benefits of different
set-ups (telemark, randonee and all its options,
split boards, and snowshoes with snowboard). We’ll
quickly move on to the fundamentals of avalanches
and avalanche rescue, introducing avalanche beacons,
shovels and other safety items. Throughout daily tours
to classic backcountry ski runs in the Tetons and surrounding
mountain ranges, we’ll blend backcountry
skiing with avalanche education. You’ll learn how to
move uphill efficiently, how to do stable and efficient
kick turns, tips on how to ski all kinds of snow conditions
and how to avoid injuries. Lectures and slide
shows about snow and avalanches will enhance and
supplement field sessions. By the end of the program,
you’ll have all the basic skills to confidently travel in the backcountry.
